Biomedical science has become one of the fastest-growing corners of the life sciences. In Sri Lanka, students with a passion for science, health, and technology are finding new opportunities to pursue their ambitions closer to home. Recognising this growing demand and its significance for both local and global health systems, Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology (APIIT), a leading higher education institution with 25+ years of academic excellence, offers a BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science degree in partnership with University of Staffordshire, UK.
WHAT SHOULD YOU KNOW ABOUT THE DEGREE?
The BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science is a full British degree awarded by University of Staffordshire, UK, delivered entirely in Sri Lanka by the APIIT Department of Biomedical Sciences. It is currently the only programme in Sri Lanka offering a full UK Biomedical Science degree from University of Staffordshire, UK, named ‘Modern University of the Year 2027’ by the Daily Mail University Guide, UK. Students at APIIT benefit from a curriculum that is identical to that delivered at University of Staffordshire, and ultimately, earn a globally recognised UK qualification without leaving home, at a fraction of the cost of studying overseas.
WHAT LABS AND FACILITIES WILL YOU TRAIN IN?
The programme is backed by APIIT’s state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, purpose-built for hands-on work in human biology, pathology, microbiology, and molecular medicine. Students get extensive practical lab experience from day one, in an environment that mirrors the lab-based learning students would encounter at University of Staffordshire in the UK, so graduates have the technical competence and confidence to walk into a clinical laboratory, research facility, or pharmaceutical setting and contribute from day one.
WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH A BSC (HONS) BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE DEGREE?
Biomedical science is the backbone of modern healthcare. Biomedical scientists are behind the majority of all clinical decisions made in medicine. As Sri Lanka’s pharmaceutical and diagnostics sectors expand, so does local demand, alongside opportunities in:
· clinical laboratories in hospitals and diagnostic centres;
· biomedical research institutions;
· pharmaceutical and biotech companies;
· public health, epidemiology, and health policy;
· and further postgraduate study (MSc, MRes, or PhD).
IS THIS THE SAME AS GETTING THE DEGREE IN THE UK?
Yes, you will experience the same award, same curriculum, and same quality assurance as studying at University of Staffordshire in the UK. Students also have the option to transfer to University of Staffordshire’s UK campus to complete their final year, and graduates who do so can apply for the UK’s 1.5-year post-study work visa, giving them a route to international experience before returning to Sri Lanka or building a career abroad.
HOW DOES THE COST CAMPARE TO STUDYING THIS OVERSEAS?
Completing a biomedical science degree entirely overseas can be financially out of reach for many. Pursuing your BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science at APIIT instead saves an estimated LKR 12 million compared to completing the full degree abroad, making it one of the most cost-effective routes to a UK qualification in the field.
WHO WILL BE TEACHING ON THE COURSE?
An academic team where many lecturers hold PhDs and are research-active, bringing both academic and industry expertise into the classroom, alongside close, personalised support to help students get the most out of the programme.
Applications are now open for the October 2026 intake.
